The good thing is you have lots of time to fix it! And if you like Junk Jack, the visual style of the older games probably won't be a problem. A Link to the Past is still one of my favorite games as far as art is concerned, just for the color scheme.
The more limited a game system is, the more amazing the results can be, since every choice has to be deliberate and meaningful and it really has to come down to awesome gameplay since you can't make up for shortcomings with intense cinematics etc. One of my game design classes started out just learning Atari (which was before my time, a bit) for that very reason.
Also, old DOS games are something you should try out, like everything Commander Keen. The bonus of these is that a lot are shareware or just not available to buy, so pirating isn't exactly an issue. Also, if you have an SNES around, those things could survive nuclear war, I think, and it probably still works. Mines still hooked up to my HDTV next to my Wii, haha.
Edit: creating a thread in the other games section to avoid derailing further! I think people who like Junk Jack would enjoy a lot of older games that might have been before their time.
