Personally, I don't think of bows as a particularly useful item in Junk Jack,
It costs a bit to make arrows, it's hard to aim, etc.
Well what about some new bows? Both crafted and rare.

Crafted:

Composite Bow:
B= Bow (any)... A _ _
A= Bar (any).... _ B _ = Composite Bow : Made in ANVIL
_ = Blank........ A _ _
(If you want to make a wooden composite bow you need a wooden bow and two sticks
If you want to make a titanium composite bow, you need a titanium bow and two titanium bars, etc.
This will apply to all crafted bows)
Stats:
+1 range
+.10 hearts of damage
What this means is that it will take the stats of whatever bow you used and add the bonus shown
So a wooden bow would have 2 range right?
But a wooden composite bow would have 3 range and an additional .10 hearts of damage when an arrow is shot

Long Bow:
B= Bow (any)... _ A _
A= Bar (any).... _ B _ = Long Bow : Made in ANVIL
_ = Blank........ _ A _
Stats:
+ 1.5 Range

Crossbow:
B= Bow (any)... A _ _
A= Bar (any).... B I A = Crossbow = Made in ANVIL
I= Ingot (Any)... A _ _
(For a wooden crossbow you would use a wood block instead of an ingot)
Stats:
+ 5 Range
+ 1 heart of damage
BUT
3 second reload time

Rares:

Cupid Bow: 5 Range
From the Old Junk Jack

Cluckshot: 4 Range
(Shoots arrows, but they look like chickens when shot)
This is a reference to Diablo III, with the Cluckeye, which has similar effects

Angelic Bow: 4 Range
(Arrow produces light when shot and continues to do so when stuck in the ground)

Nyan Bow: 4 Range
(Leaves a trail of rainbows when an arrow is shot)

Elvish Bow: 5 Range
(Uses one arrow per shot, but fires two in the same direction)

Vampirus: 3 Range
(Heals .2 hearts when an enemy is hit with an arrow)

Just a couple suggestions
I don't know if this would make JJX too RPGish
If not I would want to do another post on other weapons and armor
Let me know
So what do you guys think?

Bows as you said, are quite useless. The only time bows are of use is the brief time you are stuck with 1 range stone tools.

I would love to play as some sort of "ranger" in JJx. I KNOW it's a sandbox but kind of like Terraria where you can play as a "ranger" and use only ranged weapons. Just makes the game more interesting

I agree in any game Inplay I al am an "ranger",but in jjx I have to resort to tank.

I think that melee weapons should have very short range. The fact that some of the melee weapons reach like 3 or 4 squares away adds to the reason why bows are obsolete. I know the monsters are scary when they get close but maybe that would be a reason why people could opt for a bow?
